The trade-off: People can vote in any vote center that's convenient to them, as long as it's in the county where they live. The centers may be open longer hours. And with more staff and equipment in one place, there's more back-up if something goes wrong. "It may be that they're much easier to do in Denver and Boulder - suburban areas - but not that easy to do in older cities like Dayton or Cincinnati," says Robert Stein, a Rice University elections expert who specializes in vote centers. They were pioneered in Colorado and were tried last year in a handful of counties in Texas and Indiana.
